The Boss 302 was created for one reason: to compete in the SCCA Trans-Am championship series in 1969. The rules required manufacturers to sell a street version, so 1,628 of them were built. The result was one of the greatest Mustangs ever made: a high-revving 302 cubic inch V8, a close-ratio four-speed manual, and a chassis setup for real handling rather than just straight-line speed. The "Boss" nickname — coined by Larry Shinoda, who designed it — was slang of its era and it stuck perfectly.
