The Thunderbird was launched in 1955 as a direct response to the Corvette, and the result was a two-seat personal luxury car that outsold its rival seven to one in its first year. With its distinctive porthole windows (added in 1956), chrome grille, and optional removable hardtop, the early T-Bird became a symbol of 1950s American optimism.
